MLB Rule Changes: The 2022 season will feature several new Major League Baseball rule changes.
The new collective bargaining agreement between Major League Baseball and the MLBPA will bring several new rule changes for the 2022 season.

With Opening Day approaching, let’s take a look at those new rules.
MLB Rule Changes
Designated harmful base
Also known as the “Ohtani rule” for two-way player Shohei Ohtani, this base allows shooters to fire their own punches. This person will be considered two separate people. If this player is replaced as a pitcher, he can continue as a designated hitter. If he is replaced as the designated hitter, he may remain in the game as the hitter.
If a player is replaced as the bowler and hitter, he cannot be replaced by another two-way player.
Players such as Ohtani, Adam Wainwright and Madison Bumgarner may benefit from this rule.
Active List Limits
Between Opening Day, April 7 through May 1, the maximum number of active players on a team will increase to 28 players, and 29 players for any double-headed player during this period. On May 2, the number of active players will return to 26, with a maximum of 27 players on days when a double header is played.
Before May 2, shooters and two-way players will be eligible to be placed on the 10-day hit list. After May 2, these players will be eligible for the 15-day infected list. The player must remain in the option selection or full assignment for 10 days before recalling or re-selecting before May 2.
Option assignments before May 2 will not count toward the agreement that will limit options to any player, up to five.
MLB Additional Base Roles
In an effort to preserve the health and safety of players, the league has agreed to continue the rule that each additional round begins with a runner in second place. The hitter, or substitute, who leads the turn will be the next hitter in the lineup. The runner in second place will be the last hitter of the team’s previous inning.
Any runner or hitter previously removed from the game will not be eligible to return to the game in this situation.
For the purpose of calculating rounds, a runner who starts the game from second base is considered to have reached second base due to a field fault, but the foul will not be evaluated for the opposing team.
MLB Match Format
The rule changes from the new CBA also include an important change to the MLB post-season playoffs.
Each of the six First Division winners will receive an extension berth. Division winners with the best two numbers will receive a farewell round in the first round. The remaining division winner and three wild cards will meet in the Best of Three Wild Cards series.
For fans of chaos, this, unfortunately, eliminates the need for tie-break matches to determine the division winners or finalists.
